What to Check First When Receiving a Formal Notice

General information on legal preparation and documents.

·Av. Ali Dolaz·4 min read

Formal service is intended to deliver notice of an act or judicial process to its recipient in the prescribed manner. The issuing authority, file number, contents and delivery information help identify the next steps.

Many applications and objections are linked to service or another date specified by law. Recording every date and requested action separately creates a reliable starting point.

General checklist

  • Record the issuing authority and file number.
  • Note the delivery or awareness date.
  • Separate the underlying process from the requested action.
  • Enter stated time limits in a calendar together with their starting point.
  • Keep the envelope, electronic service record and annexes together.
  • Gather earlier notices and documents from the same file.

The applicable procedure and deadline may vary according to the notice. Preserving all information is therefore important for a general review.
